This is an interesting article I found on Spineuniverse. It's explains very well the vicious circle of events that herniated and degenerative discs set up.
It is likely that in addition to pain from a compresssed nerveroot, that other structures in the neck are a pain generator at the same time.

Such as the facet joints that have to carry the extra load that the disc can no longer carry..the disc it self.. ligaments, and of course the muscles.

I have been doing " high tech "...

You know, I had something wierd happen to me
recently. I re-injured my poor right shoulder 2 weeks
ago. Even that, something wierd has happend - in
re-dislocating it, I untrapped the nerve and can FEEL my
hand all the way again!! Bet I'm babying it. Something to
be happy about, I'm dancing - carefully. I hadn't felt it

I have degerated disks from C- 5 to T - 1. Lately
it hasn't been bothering me. My X- rays show calcium
deposits which are pinching the nerve on the left side.
Thus, my pain and numbness will go down my left arm. They
can;t do nerve blocks because it's the spinal cord. There
is, however , enough room for the spinal cord to fit. I'm
back at physio now, so I'll see what they can do.

Kanutta, I forgot - I lost 30 lbs, which brought my
weight back to normal, with the Reactive Hypoglycemic
Diet. The research I did said any weight I could
healthily take off would help take the stress off my
spine, and have the muscles built back up. Exercise
