Hi ya Mosken... Just out of
curiousity, which kind of ginseng is it ? I took Siberian
ginseng in the past for quite a while and didn't have any
kind of side effects or
reactions.

Great site Mosken. I rely on my herbal supplements
& have worried some about the possible side
effects. So far the benefits seem to outweigh the
negative effects.

Geez !
![]() I just finished reading the info on St. John's Wort. I have been taking it for years because of mood swings. I have been having some weird symptoms lately and just read up on serotonin syndrome which can be caused by extended use of St. John's Wort. Suffice it to say I am going to leave them out of my daily routine for a while. Thanks again, Mosken |

Serotonin syndrome can also be caused by
anti-depressants.
See this: www.google.com/search?hl=...ts&spell=1 I had a problem with St. Johns wart also. And I was taking half the dose recommended. I kept feeling faint, and a few times I thought I was blacking out. So needless to say, I dumped that one. But I do take some others. Moderation may be the key, although some natualpaths believe small amounts are useless. But I really have no problems with a pill called Source Naturals, Fibro Response. Been on it for two years. It targets immune building, anti viral/bacterial/muscle pain relief, energy levels, and neuro symptoms. |

Light-headedness and some really weird, half-waking
dreams as I am waking up in the morning are what I have
been experiencing lately. Those and a really serious lack
of the ability to concentrate.
I have had concentration problems all of my life (I suspect that I have a rather mild case of Attention Deficit Disorder since it runs in my family) but lately it has been much worse. But initially St. John's Wort was a life saver for me. I was having wild mood swings a few years ago and the Wort leveled me off without any apparent side effects. And that may not be the problem now, but I think it is worth leaving off for a while to find out. Perhaps I have just stayed on it too long without a break. Celia |

I've heard by many doctors that you shouldn't take
St Johns Wort with any anti-depressants......

After my appt. with the kidney specialist this
week, I will be very careful about taking any kind of
herbal supplement or even vitamin supplement. He really
clued me in on the problems my kidneys are having with
some of these supplements that we take for granted will
not harm us. I have lost 20% of my kidneys function due
to taking Celebrax for too long; my kidneys now have a
hard time dealing with such things as Vitamin C, A, or D
and many other "harmless" supplements
and vitamins. So, a gentle warning to anyone who has any
possible problem with their kidneys (liver, too); please
be sure to check out before taking!

Thanks for the warning, I'm very protective of my
liver!

Hmmmmm, I don't know how I missed this
one.
I do a lot with herbs, mostly for minor stuff, and much of the herb either grown, or collected myself. But it is so important to check with your doc before using ANY herbals. And there are so many out there. |

Oh Mosken I'm so sorry that
happened to you . I've used , grown and even made insence
from I don't know how many herbs . But my mother began
teaching me about herbs when i was little and in the last
32 years I've studied everything about herbs I could find
. I do not know how many time I've tried to tell people
before you begin taking any herb do the research so you
know what you're putting in your body ! I found out
several months ago that if one takes atenenol a heart
medicine you shouldn't eat or use real licorice because
it's been known to have fataL SIDE
EFFECTS!
As for ginseng I didn't know
about the raised blood pressure , even peppermint can
raise you blood pressure in fact some teas for colds use
peppermint because it will also cause one to become warm
so for the chills that accompany a cold it helps
... Another group i belong to
decided to create a topic just on herbs where members
could go to post recipes for teas and also post
information that anyone found on herbs that were
dangerous . This group is where i first found out about
licorce .I have 20 or 30 good books on
herbal uses and I still find every once in awhile the
herb I need information on won't be found in one book but
then another will have all the information I could ever
use![]() ![]() I hope this helps , Later Fibrofool |

I have several books on herbs that I refer to when
I don't want to use pharmaceuticals. Even simple things
like licorice root (I love licorice spice tea) is
something I can't use frequently, because licorice root
will raise blood pressure. And Echinacea, which is
becoming more popular as a cold remedy, should not be
used for more than 14 days continuously, as it can cause
liver damage.
Many people who haven't educated themselves about herbs are unaware that many of our modern medicines originated from plants, foxglove being the one that comes to mind for me, is the origin of a very potent heart medication (can't remember it's name now). Even simple things like chamomile tea - I can't drink chamomile before bedtime because it gives me nightmares. Yet it is a commonly used natural sleep remedy. |

That's a really good site Mosken,
Thanks!!!
It's always good to check a few sources before starting anything new, no matter what it is. It won't guarantee anything, but it can only help. I've been know to over do it, but never for long. Most things don't seem to work for very long with me anyway and it's always good to give your system a break no matter what it is; herbs, supplements, pharmaceuticals, etc. Thanks Again, ebDan |

thanks again, heres some more info, and please, if
anyone has any important info please feel free to post it
here. We are all groping for answers of our health
problems....but it takes time to research the right road
for each individual. I take many herbs, but nothing in
excess. And I am cautious.
I do see a pattern of herbal remedies phasing in and out of popularity, almost as quickly fading as clothes fads! Just do your homework first, and check with your pharmacy before a regimen change, to be safe. Definitely Hazardous: aristolochic acid (Aristolochia, birthwort, snakeroot, snakeweed, sangree root, sangrel, serpentary, wild ginger) Very Likely Hazardous: comfrey (Symphytum officinale, *** ear, black root, blackwort, bruisewort, consolidae radix, consound, gum plant, healing herb, knitback, knitbone, salsify, slippery root, symphytum radix, wallwort) androstenedione (4-androstene-3, 17-dione, andro, androstene) chaparral (Larrea divaricata, creosote bush, greasewood, hediondilla, jarilla, larreastat) germander (Teucrium chamaedrys, wall germander, wild germander) kava (Piper methysticum, ava, awa, gea, gi, intoxicating pepper, kao, kavain, kawa-pfeffer, kew, long pepper, malohu, maluk, meruk, milik, rauschpfeffer, sakau, tonga, wurzelstock, yagona, yangona) Likely Hazardous: Bitter orange (Citrus aurantium, green orange, kijitsu, neroli oil, Seville orange, shangzhou zhiqiao, sour orange, zhi oiao, zhi xhi) Organ/glandular extracts (brain/adrenal/pituitary/placenta/other gland "substance" or "concentrate") Lobelia (Lobelia inflata, asthma weed, bladderpod, emetic herb, gagroot, lobelie, indian tobacco, pukeweed, vomit wort, wild tobacco) Pennyroyal oil (Hedeoma pulegioides, lurk-in-the-ditch, mosquito plant, piliolerial, pudding grass, pulegium, run-by-the-ground, squaw balm, squawmint, stinking balm, tickweed) Scullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora, blue pimpernel, helmet flower, hoodwort, mad weed, mad-dog herb, mad-dog weed, quaker bonnet, scutelluria, skullcap) Yohimbe (Pausinystalia yohimbe, johimbi, yohimbehe, yohimbine) Experts advise about the importance of asking patients about any supplements they may be taking. Not only do many supplements have significant adverse effects, they may also interfere with the effectiveness of many prescription medications, including birth control pills. |

Had to take in all Wanda's tablets from home to the
pain clinic as they were simplifying all her tablets and
that. Surprisingly they chucked out the herbal ones that
she had, as they said they didn't know how they would
react with the normal meds they were giving her.

Peter, how are things? Good to hear from
you.
It doesn't surprise me that the pain clinic took this action. I think we take herbal remedies without thinking that there could be side effects from them. We just think, well they are herbs which should be safe. I know I have in the past. We need to look closer at what we take. Take care Pete and let us know how things are going.

Very interesting! I try and keep up on herbs and
their interactions with meds. I quit the ginseng due to
headaches and St. John's Wort made my asthma worse.
I do take melatonin, but it is prescription melatonin and is slow release and has really helped my fragmented sleep to where I do not wake up nearly as much. I am under a doctor's care using it and it has really helped me. I was also put on prescription bioidentcial homone forms of DHEA, he started me at 25 mg and after 8 weeks and more blood work reduced that to 10 mg. I think it is important to have bloodwork done regularly if you are on herbs or medications of any kind as even tyelonol can damage the liver. sue in ohio |

Re: Always drink enough water! | #20 | ||

One of the most simple things we usually mess up is
drinking enough water. Either drink 1 oz - 1/2 oz per
pound of body weight DAILY. Some say you can count
artificially sweetened beverages; I suggest to never
count Soda, as it contains phosphates.
EVENING PRIMROSE oil: it can have a bad reaction in conjunction with Neurontin and Topamax, or other anti-seizure drugs. Huh, funny about the adrenal glands being on the potentially hazardous list; I was given Bovine Hypothalamus when my adrenals crashed by the Chiro, but NOT the regular doctor! But then the Chiro also sold me Turmeric and ginger caps, telling me it would stop my inflammation. I just bring a list of what I'm taking to any doctor I see. ECHINACEA: it has fallen off the favored list, as it has proven to do no better than people not taking it for colds or flu. Too bad, I have a big bottle of it, and I'm not allowed to take it due to the Guaifenesin Protocol. I'm just thankful they haven't found any reactions to Guai. - Julie |
