Social Security Disability Exam |
Lead | ||
|
I am new here and have applied for Social Security
Disability. I have fibromyalgia, chronic myofascial pain
syndrome, bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome post op,
bilateral shoulder impingement, cervical degenerative
disc disease, thoracic outlet syndome, osteoarthritis of
spine and knees, hypertension, hyperthyroid, allergies
and depression. I was wondering if anyone else had
undergone an exam and what the person conducting the exam
did. Thanks for any input.

CouriousThere are some, who have file and I'm sure they will be able to answer your question... Seems you certainly have plenty to get disability. Think? You will need written documentation from all docs.to have proof to support all diagnoses? I'm Sara from small town in Indiana. Have Fibro and Breast Cancer diagnosed in 2005. Worked in over 20
years.Mine started after an auto accident in 2003 -suffered a lot of pain till MRI in 2004 -whiplash caused -4 cervical disc bulge -did pain mangement for nerve block. Our group is very friendly -caring an suportive. Ask anything and we will give suggestion, when we can... (hugs for
YOU)

Hi Curious! Welcome to Friends!
![]() I've had 3 different exams by government-appointed doctors in the past year for my Social Security Disability (SSDI) application. One was by a physical medicine specialist, one was by a general practitioner, and one was by a psychologist. I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome without pain, so my situation is somewhat different from yours. I can tell you that I walked in there expecting complicated testing, long exams, hair-raising meetings, etc., and I was wrong on all accounts. In each case, the appointments lasted maybe 20-40 minutes (I think). I live in a city, so there are a lot of people applying for SSDI. I found that the places I was sent to were not like regular doctor's offices - they were like SSDI mills. All these doctors do all day is examine SSDI applicants. In my case, and I think, in most cases (from what I've gathered), the government doctors were relatively incompetent. They asked me a bunch of questions about my symptoms and disability. Then they did very basic testing - for example, the GP checked my reflexes, the psychologist read me a little list I was supposed to remember over time, and the specialist asked me to bend forward, backwards, and side-to-side if I could (I had been sent to the specialist for an old back injury that has nothing to do with my disability...go figure). They're definitely not what I'd call "comprehensive". But, they do their thing and we're required to go. It was all pretty mellow in my case. Above all, I got the sense that it's important that: 1) your own, personal doctors have good documentation on your disability and that they support your claim in the medical records. 2) you're polite and nice to the government doctors. I brought my partner with me to act as a witness and help me stay calm - being nervous is not helpful, and I tend to get really nervous in those situations. 3) review everything you've written for SSDI in the past before going in to these appointments. It's important that your description of your disability be consistent (even if you're saying, "I can never predict how bad my pain will be, but it's usually like ---- ..." I focused on my disabling symptoms. Always be honest. 4) don't be too much of an optimist when you talk to these people. (I have a tendency to try to paint a rosy picture for people, and I had to remind myself of this before the exams...just tell it like it is.) Good luck with this! Please let us know how it goes! It's a total headache. Don't expect great medical discoveries or information from these people, but don't expect a nightmare in the exam room, either. |

Welcome curious. I am Judy from Kansas.
Mother of three grown children. And grandma to 8 (5 girls 3 boys) and one greatgrandson. #2 is a girl due in Feb. I have been on SS disability for about 10 yrs, I guess. So my memory may not be the greatest. The drx. reports are going to be a big part of your determination. The SS Dr. will test your reflexes. and maybe have you walk across the floor. I can't think of much out of the visit that should realy be of concern to you. My dr. was very nice. Explained he didn't make the determination. Just had to give his input so SS could make that decision. I think on the SS info page I posted long time back a link for what to expect. I hope you can find it and get help there. I am sure others will join us in a warm welcome. And offering any advice, information for you to go by. Just don't worry too much. Your records should be enough to get you there. for you
outcome to be favorable.God bless |

Re: Social Security Disability Exam | #8 | ||

My thanks to you for all the information I am
receiving here. I gather that the exam is not a
regimented exam prescribed in a standard format by the
Soc Sec Administration. The doctors do the exam they feel
pertinent and submit their "findings" to the Soc Sec Adm.
I believe all my doctors records should support my claim
but do not know what the SS folks are seeing when they
read the record. Possibly different wording, more pain
prescriptions than I have or what. All I can do is submit
to the exam, be honest and see what happens. You have all
been great and I hope that you all will have a terrific
2007.

Hello Sweet Sara,
As of right now I am dealing with radiculopathy in my left arm due to a neck fracture about 10 years ago. My doctor yesterday recommended a nerve block. Can you give me any insight on this? Hope you are doing well at this time with all you have had to deal with. Warm regards, Grace |
