From the October 9 issue of "Women's World":
"1. Eat more beans- They're so rich in cancer fighting antioxidants, downing half a cup daily could cut your breast cancer risk 30% say University of Texas researchers. And since beans are also loaded with fiber- which binds to toxins in the digesive tract, sweeping them out of the body before they can be absorbed- they actually offer a double dose of protetion, says Dr. David L. Katz, director of Yale University's Prevention Research Center.
2. Make steak an appetizer- Women who eat large ammounts (one and a half servings or more) of red meat almost every day are twice as likely to develop breast cancer as those who eat smaller portions, less than three times weekly, the latest research shows. Tip: don't overcook it. When meat is charred or heavily browned, carcinogens form on its surface. Cut your breast cancer risk five fold by sticking to rare or medium done fare- and make portions palm siz.
3. Grab some grapes- Eating 10 servings of fruit -any fruit- weekly reduces breast cancer risk by 29%. But opt for grapes and the pyaoff may be even more impressive. Having one cup of red or purple grapes- or a cup of their juic- four times weekly improves immune function so dramatically, it can shut down the growth of abnormal cells within one week says Daniel A. Nadeau, M.D., author of "The Color Code: A Revolutionary Eating Plan for Optimum Health".
4. Get up and go- You already know that exercise helps reduce your chance of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. But protect your breasts? Yes! Walking just halfan hour a day is enough to reduc your risk of breast cancer 50% by lowering levels of cancer fueling estrogen, say researchers. 'You don't need to get your exercise in huge chunks,' notes Pamela Peeke, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland. 'Ten minutes here and there works like a charm!'
5. Sip this juice before dineer- V-8! Do this regularrly and you'll effortlessly cut about 135 calories from your meal. Data shows that your breast cancer risk automatically drops 28% if you stay within 10 pounds of what you weighted at age 18. Extra fat produces estrogen and growth factors that fuel the growth of abnormal cells, explains Dr. Peeke. 'What's more , many cancer causing environmental toxins are stored in body fat, so the less fat you have, the fewer toxins your body harbors.'
6. Fit in flax- When it comes to breast health, flaxseeds are one of the most protective foods you can eat. Tossing just one tablespoon of ground flaxseeds- the top dietary source of cancer-fighting lignans- into your yogurt, cereal, cooked foods or smoothies can reduce your risk of breast cancer 72%, a German study suggests.
7. Supplement with D- A high intake of vitamin D is linked with a 50% lower risk of breast cancer, thanks to the fact that breast tissue contains an enzyme that transforms D into a powerful cancer fighter. Aim or 1,000 IUs daily."
I have dense breasts so I am at higher risk so I will defintely be trying these. The only one that was a surprise to me was the one about ground flaxseed. It has to be freshly ground so I am hunting for a product I saw in a health food magazine that comes with a grinder like some peppers and sea salt do. I will be definitely getting more flax in my diet. I don't like V8 or veggie juices , but have found that I love the new fusion juice from them that has fruit and veggie juices in them and each 8 ounce glass is equal to a full serving of fruits and veggies. I love the mango peach one.
