I agree with a lot of what you are saying, Michelle. Except, I don't think it is that simple. The situation is complex. The Western world could stop
buying oil from the Middle East. Would that help? The thing is the Western world has become too dependent of the oil. Now the developing countries want
their share and together we are increasing the demand and the prices. The free market is finally forcing us to go back to the drawing board to look for
alternative energy, like you and Sherry said. Even if it is late, it is a good thing.

It IS a good thing. We desperately need truly clean alternatives.I just hope that this time, we don't stray off the course the way we did 30 years ago.If we
had stuck with the ideals, and ideas that we had then, we wouldn't be in the bind we are now. The problem is, we still have too many people who believe
that if we just open up our seashores and wildlife refuges to more and more drilling, we'll be just fine, the price of gas will drop, and we won't be
dependant on foreign oil. People would rather believe what the politicians tell them than to research issues like this for themselves.I suppose it's just
easier for them to hear a politician or an oil executive say " we need to drill more" and blindly agree, than to educate themselves on the damage
that would do,or to demand more research into cleaner, better alternatives. We're addicted to oil in all its forms- gasoline, plastics, even our skin care
products(yes, anything that says"petrolatum" on the label is an oil derivitive). And in many countries, especially the Unites States, people are so
afraid of change that they would rather stick to what they know than even try to look into other ways of doing things.I don't know about others, but where
I live, the people who complain the loudest about gas prices and the need to open up more drilling, are those who are still driving around in SUVs(usually
alone- not even thinking about car-pooling to help offset the cost),and have no intention of giving them up because it's a status symbol. And if you try to
tell them that even if we DO drill more, we'll only drop the price by 3-4 cents per gallon, they refuse to believe that.

Well said, Sherry! I also believe it is important to educate ourselves and I hope we can contribute and encourage our members to do that.

You know, there are ads going here that state that the majority of the oil that we use here, in the US, comes from right here in the US. I don't know the
validity of that ad, but if it is true, then they need to explain why the high prices.
I agree, Shad, that we dropped the ball all those years ago (makes me sound old, sheesh!), but consider the series of presidents and congress members we've had since then. We had an energy crisis then, and we have one now. The actions of finding new sources directly results from a crimp in the pocket book. Not for any "good reason" such as care of the planet and welfare of the people. Does anyone else here get the "Green Channel" on cable? They have a show, that used to play on another cable channel as well, called "Living With Ed", meaning Ed Begley, Jr. a big time environmentalist and green living proponent. Well, he and his wife went to visit Larry Hagman, remember I Dream of Jeannie and Dallas fame??? I WANT HIS HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!! No, seriously! I loved his house. It actually looked like someone lived there, not a showpiece. And it was all "green"!!! Plus, he has solar panels, a couple of football fields worth! He not only powers his on utilities (his power bill went from $37,000 a year to $13 a year, and no that isn't a typo! That $13 dollars is just the taxes and fees and paperwork. He feeds back power into the grid.) he also subsidizes(sp) 5 lower income families power bill. Amazing! He said after years of playing J.R. Ewing, he felt the need to "give back". I LOVED HIS HOUSE!!! Ed showed him some new technology where the wind turbines would be "flatter" and less space, so he will now look into it. After seeing that, I wandered to my back window wondering, now where can I fit in some solar panels..... can't afford them, but would love to outfit my house and get off the power grid! Some of Ed's ideas seem a bit "out there" but they work once you get them in place...except that whole, bicycling for a piece of toast thing, don't know about that, LOL. |
