Hamsters

Posts: 8868 07/07/08 03:07 USA	Tags : None Hi everyone, I know I haven't been around for a long time, but the kids pretty much dominate the computer now, and I don't get much time on here anymore. I just had to share a little story with you. A few weeks ago, Melissa decided she wanted to buy two hamsters. She saved up her money from cutting the grass, and bought the cage and bedding and food. About two weeks ago, I told her I'd buy the hamsters. So, she and her girlfriend picked out two really cute little dwarf hamsters and brought them home. We had no idea if we had two girls or two boys or one of each. Last night we came home from a party. Melissa brought three friends home with her. All of a sudden I hear this "ruckus" coming from her bedroom, so I go in there to find out what's going on. One of the hamsters had babies. 5 of them to be exact. I'm not quite sure when they were born, but it had to be within the last few days. Of course the mother won't let me near them, every time I try to check on her, she tries to bite me. We weren't sure if she was pregnant when we got her, or if we ended up with a male and female. I found out this morning when I found the hamsters making more babies. Needless to say, I went out and bought another cage, and now mom and dad are living in seperate quarters. My local pet store will take the babies (I doubt they will pay me anything for them, but I will need to find someone who will take them). But I think I'm going to have more babies soon - they told me that gestation for hamsters is only 16 days. So I'll have to let you know if we end up with more hamster babies in 2-3 weeks. Posts: 2810 07/07/08 13:36 USA	Debra, way back when I had my pet shop, we inadvertantly got into the hamster- breeding business,and in the interest of making sure I knew what I was doing, I had to learn a lot about them. The first rule of rodent(of any kind) ownership is- never trust what the pet shop employees tell you. Chances are, they know very little to nothing about those dwarf hamsters- including which type of dwarf hamsters they're selling(there are four different types- and that's just the dwarfs).For instance, the gestation period of all the dwarf species is 18-30 days(21 days is average),but, they can breed as soon as 24 hours after giving birth.They can become sexually mature at the ripe old age of 30 days,but usually don't breed until 2-3 months old.So, nearly any female you buy will probably be pregnant, unless they have them seperated by sex at the shop(which most don't bother with).Also, Campbells Dwarfs(the most common type found in shops)males are hands-on dads- they help with everything from the birthing process to helping care for the young. You may notice him being stressed about being away from his babies.So, you might want to suggest to your daughter that she spend a little extra time playing with him, to help prevent him from possibly getting sick from the stress. No matter what, don't disturb the nest for 10 days to 2 weeks. As you found out, some mamas will bite,but, sometimes they will kill the babies if they feel their little ones are in danger.They also may kill them if food or water are allowed to run out-so make sure there's always food and water in the cage.Thier eyes will open around 2 weeks- which is the best time to start handling them without mama getting too defensive. If the pet shop is reputable, they will at least give you some store credit for the babies you bring them- which you can use to get supplies for the one(s) you intend to keep.The babies will start to spend more time away from mom at about 3 weeks of age, but most aren't fully weaned until they're about a month old- which is the ideal time to find homes or take them to the shop. I hope this helps a little.And, congratulations to you and your daughter on becoming new dwarf owners.

I'm so glad the pet shop will take the babies and find homes for them. And such excellent advice from Shadeaux, I'm sure you and Melissa will do just fine with the new babies. It all sounds very exciting. New life always has a kind of magic that surrounds it. Hugs to you and all your Grand-furkids

Posts: 8868 07/08/08 01:14 USA	Thank you everyone!! We are having fun watching them, but I think we need to give the mama more space, and stop looking at her so often. So far everything is fine. Daddy seems to be doing okay, we had him out of his cage earlier and he ran around quite a bit. He's always been the more active of the two, but maybe that's because mama was expecting already. Mama is running in her wheel right now. Thanks for all the advice Sherry. I had no idea there were so many kinds of dwarf hamsters. The dad did seem to be almost nurturing the mom and babies. I'm beginning to think I should just put them back together again until she gets ready to give birth again (I'm pretty sure she is already pregnant again). When they get a little bigger and their eyes open, I'll try and put up some pictures. Big hugs,

Posts: 2810 07/08/08 16:21 USA	As long as dad is doing ok by himself, I wouldn't worry too much.And you're right, mama was probably not so active because of the pregnancy.That will probably change fast, now that she's had the litter. I'm sure you guys are going to have a ball with them- dwarfs, to me anyway, are a lot more fun than thier larger cousins, the teddy bears.They seem to be more sociable, too.

For a few moments he seemed really happy to be back. I guess I'll have to wait until the babies are ready to leave the nest . . . they are growing so fast I almost can't believe it.
