Ralph and I were standing there, looking out over the water(what we could see of it),and talking about how peaceful it was. The treefrogs were croaking in the trees, and the crickets were chirping.Every once in a while, a goose would honk.It was just the most serene feeling.Ralph came up behind me, and put his arms around me, and said pretty soon we would need to start packing up to leave, and he asked me if I was having fun. I told him " Yes, but I WOULD love to catch just one decent fish before I go."Then I jokingly said" Heeere fishy, fishy, fishy.", as I was slowly reeling in my bait. All of a sudden, I felt it- just a light tap. Then another. Then WHAM, the line started playing out, and my rod bent nearly double.I played it for quite a while, trying to tire it out, and it wasn't getting tired.I locked the line, so no more could play out, and I began reeling it in.I got it just below us, to where we could see it.I swear, it was HUGE. It was a catfish, and even 20 feet below us, we could see that it was at least 2 1/2 feet long, and had to weigh at least 15 pounds. But, no matter what I did, I just couldn't get it any farther than that. Even with my line locked, it was still fighting so hard, it was pulling more line than I could reel in.I finally told Ralph to take the rod, I was going to land this sucker. He took the rod, , and I grabbed the line.I began to pull the line in, and got the fish a couple of feet out of the water when....SNAP- the line broke. Ralph said my eyes got huge, and my jaw literally dropped. All I could say was "NOOOOOO!!!!".
My arms felt like I had been wrestling a bear.My shoulders still ache.Even my neck is hurting- all from fighting this one fish. But, MAN, it was the most exciting feeling in the world. The adrenaline was pumping, and I'm still jazzed from it. Only after we got back to the car, and started pulling out of the lot did it occur to me- I had my new camera in my purse, and could have gotten a picture of it to prove it really happened.Half the way home, all I could say was," No one is going to believe this. I just know no one is going to believe it." Only once in my life have I EVER caught a fish that big, and that was in Florida. As we drove past the lake, on the way home, I looked over and say" See you later, Mr. Catfish- I WILL be back."
