Here is another link...what is the pain generator?
The disc? What to do depends on what is generating the
pain.

That's true Mosken, there are many pain generators
in the spine. if you have a compromised disc, it is also
likely that the facet joints can be compromised and
causing pain.
But if you have radicular pain, it is likely that the disc is the main pain generator, but also some involvement of the facet joints are likely. One then may need a transforaminal steroid injection to treat symptoms from the disc and spinal nerve, and in addition a facet joint steroid injection. The problem is that it is not so easy to find out where the pain excactly is coming from, as symptoms from the different structures are overlapping each other. Good article, have printed that one too. I'll soon have a full library

Thanks again Kanutta for the info. I had a bad
reaction to steroid injections years ago [they were not
into the spinal column, thank God], so I have pretty much
excluded this for an alternative. But some people have
had good results.
Nerve pain is rivoting and fleeting. I generally can tell the difference in which pain, the muscle pain being totally a nagging knotted feeling, with fatigue. Nerve pain however is more precise and takes your breath away sometimes totally disabling of any movement, with weakness in extremities. Its important to differentiate between the two so the doctor knows what to treat and how to, as none of this is a "fix all". I am betting the success depends on how much the body is damaged, abused, and which multiple therapies are included. For instance, if the back muscles are in tremendous knots, just the shots won't work that well. But with a series of PTherapy, rest, massage and ultrasound, we may have a chance for some relief. And I'm not so sure, "masking" the pain is always the answer. Inevitably it comes back. But relief long enough to get a better multi-recovery plan going is a good idea. |

I have had many epidural's in my spine thru the
year's..
This is good info Kanutta...I can add, please demand to have them done Fluoroscopically guided, that way they know exactly where the problem is so the needle is going into the right place. Here is a site for the reason of Fluoroscopically guided www.greenvilleradiology.c...ctions.htm I had it the old way's before where the doc just touched and felt where the pain was and then injected blindly.. I have my done mainly for the facet joint's and the spinal stenosis,it get's so tight in there I cannot move my leg's..my last one was a 5 level area in my thoratic area/facet joint's where the scoliosis is,and between that and the Chiro appt's I have had less pain..though it never last's long.. ![]() |

I was supposed to have it done on both my neck and
back discs (8), but decided not to, because it seemed
like it wouldn't really help me.
I want a solution, not a patch! I can't afford it anyway. - Julie |
