From the April issue of Dr. Weil's "Self-Healing Newsletter":

"A recent study conducted at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center found that compression therapy may be as effective as medication for alleviating symptoms of restless legs syndrome (RLS). Researchers randomly assigned patients to wear pneumatic compression devices (PCDs) which apply pressure to the leg at intervals, or a sham device. After wearing the PCDs for a minimum of one hour every day for a month, some patients reported improved quality of life, less fatigue, and reductions in RLS severity, with one third experiencing complete relief from symptoms; the control group reported no relief."

I remember they put those things on my legs for the first couple of days after my spinal surgery in 1998 and they actually hurt me and kept me awake most of the nights I had to wear them. Every time they went into compression mode it woke me up. I was never so glad to get out of the hospital in my life! Most people find them soothing, but not me!
