I am wondering if I do this every time and the current user gets corrupted and I do not realize it soon enough then the backups will also be corrupted. Thanks.Gerry,
First and in general, there is no reason other than system configuration or hardware limitations that should cause your user profile to become corrupted. The major reason why user profiles become corrupted is because someone shuts down Windows before shutting down DNS. The problem here is that DNS may begin its own shutdown and attempt to save your user profile(s) but does not complete because the Windows shutdown or restart commences before the updating of the user profiles is complete. The other reasons for that corruption over user profile occurs most often are:
1. Spontaneous shutdown of either Windows or an application in which you are dictating that causes DNS to crash.
2. Failure of the delayed write cache to properly update your DNS user profile.
3. Running DNS on a system that simply has too little RAM, such as running Windows Vista 32-bit or 64-bit with only 1 GB of RAM, or running Windows Vista with a minimal hardware configuration such as the Pentium 4 with only 512 bytes of L2 cache. The key here is that the more RAM you have installed the less likely you are to end up with user profile corruption.
4. On the other side of the coin, if you want to have the choice as to whether to update your user profile(s), then unselect "Automatically save user files". DNS will prompt you when your user profiles require saving when you select this option. In addition, another advantage of this is that if for any reason Windows shuts down or something else occurs relative to any of the above, and you have not elected to save your user profile, there is less likelihood of user profile corruption because nothing is written until you click the option to save your user profile (YES).
If you are careful, your user profile(s) should never get corrupted.
