I am Linda, I met Mosken, the board owner of Friends, online 3 years ago. We became fast internet friends, and I was lucky to go visit her in Norway twice. I love my cyberworld, gardening, photography, PaintshopPro, Art, cats and being outdoors. I used to be a U.S. rated beach volleyball player. Posts: 2221 04/11/03 13:27 Lady Grace Moderator Young Adult USA	Linda! Great idea! I guess i just got "cyber adopted" in a sense... This is a great idea, now i just have to think where to begin... I was born and raised here in western washington with my mom, dad and my twin brother. Let me tell you, there is no experience like growing up with a twin... i loved it and we still get that "freaky twin" intuition thing. I've always been into school, loving to learn, though not always loving the drama. I'm sure you all understand what i'm talking about. Honestly, i think high school is the whole basis of soap operas! I've always been a sporty girl. I was a gymnast, and loved to dance. I also played baseball, softball, soccer, football with my bro and his friends, volleyball, i ran track and did the long jump and shot put, and played basketball. I certainly miss these things. When i just turned 14, i messed up my knees which ended the sporty days until surgery 2 years ago. Unfortunately, this blasted illness decided to rear it's ugly head. I graduated last June with honors, although i was ill. I didn't really have a senior year...i was on a homebound program my last semester, where by the grace of god i completed the whole year in one term. Thank the lord for wonderful teachers. They have earned and maintained my respect. I planned on going to college but wasn't able to leave. I also had to quit my job as Spanish teacher at a day care. Now, i have found a lovely university where i can get my Bachelors of Arts in Cultural Studies. Very excited. I want to become a successful writer and eventually gain my masters and PhD. Then i wish to become a college professor. Ahh Dreams! Gotta love'em! I have been extremely blessed with a wonderful family, fantastic friends and neighbors, and 4 animals who all love me. And i cherish them dearly. And now i have this board, which i believe is a godsend...as i'm sure many people will agree. Okay, i've rambled enough, and if you have been able to read and make sense of this, I'M SO PROUD! I'm done, who's next? Take Care~ Amanda

Posts: 1924 04/16/03 12:50	My name is Sarah, I am the young adult host I was born on September 8th, 1984 in Houston, Texas. After the birth of my only brother David, my family later moved to Pennsylvania when I was three years old and I grew up a happy and healthy child. I became a Christian in 1991 on December 16th, my mother’s birthday. In my young years, my passion was soccer. I lived and breathed soccer. I was an all-star soccer player and played on various intramural and travel teams. I will never forget when my soccer team finally won the championship, after years of coming in second place. I was elated and overjoyed. Looking back, my identity was intertwined with my athletics, but by the age of nine that would all change. All of my life I never dreamed of being struck with a chronic illness, but in December of 1994, I came down with a virus that seemed like the flu, I had a low-grade fever, muscle pain, and other symptoms. After two weeks I was still ill and I went to see my doctor. He misdiagnosed me with Lyme Disease, which I was treated for 6 months. Still I was sure it would all go away, that it was just a temporary problem. The fever did go away after 6 months, but the muscle pain did not. After all those months of treatment I found out that I never had lyme disease and was told I had growing pains. In 1995, my life went on, but now with added pain, but I was more than sure that it would soon go away and I would get back to the normal life I led. The following year in the winter of 1996, I again came down with a flu-like virus that would not seem to go away. Again, I went through mis-diagnosis after mis-diagnosis. I was emotionally devastated. I was put on complete bed rest and my muscles began to deteriorate and atrophy. Could this possibly be permanent? I knew that something was wrong with me, I just did know what. My parents were desperate and so was I. Out of their desperation, they took out our insurance book and randomly selected a doctor’s name, Dr. Rustein, who would finally give me a diagnosis. In April of 1996, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Finally with my diagnosis I felt some kind of relief, just to know what was plaguing me for all those years. I was admitted into children’s Seashore House, which is a hospital for physical therapy and was in the hospital for 2 months. It has been 6 years since I was diagnosed; I am now 18 years old. I look forward to getting to know all of you!

I was involved with everything-editor of the year book, capt. of dance and majorettes, prom queen, I was a cheerleader and had the greatest friends. I am a very busy body and I that is where I want to stay. But I've always experienced more than my share of illnesses, they were tiny to my problems now. I am now in my second year at college. Involved with cheerleading, volleyball, and everything here on campus. I [b]WAS[/b] doing great- always got decent grades, had wonderful friends and then I went to DISNEY. Don't get me wrong I had the greatest time working in my internship at Walt Disney World. But it was while I was there,.. I got ill. I was doing full time job- somedays I would pull 13 hours others just 8 but on top of that I was also working on full time school over the Internet here in PA. And lets face it where ever you go there is "high school soap opera drama!!!" Lets just say I was a little stressed. I was worn down and became very ill. I would go into work in the mornings and they all thought I was hung over....I looked it, I couldn't focus, I was sick to my stomach and I looked tired and run down. it was the greatest experience of my life. . yet it ruined my life. I made the greatest friends there who would take me to the hospitals- since I didn't have a car there, but it was a lost cause. The doctors and nurses laughed in my face. They didn't believe that I was sick. My mother had to fly me home the following day to see my own doctor. they ran tests upon tests, they tested me for everything. After a week of hospitals and doctors I flew back to Florida with no conclusion. I went to work in pain. A month later I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. It was the worst thing that could of happened to me in my life. I am now limited on what I am able to do. I am always tired but no sleep ever comes. I wish I could live in my nice bed. But I am still in school trying to get my degree. and sometimes I think I will never get there. But I never give up. I am searching every where for information and cures for this disease. I have yet to find any thing to work. They say to get better all you need is rest and a non- stressful life, Well that just ain't me.! Posts: 4976 06/15/03 16:53 Shine On	My name is Merethe, and I'm almost 22 years old. I live in Norway, in a city called Stavanger. I love that city! I have lived here for all my life. I was born on july 28. In 1981. On a sunny day! The day before Charles and Diana got married. In Stavanger I live with my boyfriend Sigbjørn. We now live in an appartment that we rent, but we are looking for a nice house or an appartment to buy. So we are looking around on the marked. But we have'nt found our dream house yet! I've got many things that I like! My interrest are drawing! I love to draw, and do that as often as I can! You can see some of my last drawings on "Galleri" on my hompage. Other interrest are animals. I love cats, dogs... And I have 2 golden fishes. But I wish to get a dog or a cat soon. (And I'm also a party- animal....) I have worked with children in a Kindergarden. I did that for almost 3 years I think. But in August last year, me and my boyfriend Sigbjørn, went into an car crash. I soon started to feel pain in my back, and got weeker and weeker. I went to my doctor and he did'nt belive my pain after 4 months. I went for a speschalist. And he diagnosed me fibromyalgia. (FMS) After that I went to change primary doctor. The new doctor is so nice with me! He ask me what I think, and we together decide what's best for me. I'm not working by now, but I hope I soon can begin to work again. But first I'm going for a rehabilitasion senter. It's in Rauland. Within 2 months they say. So I hope I can get better soon. Thanks so much for helping me so much in the Friends board! Posts: 0 08/07/03 00:05	Hey there everyone.....My name is Wendy...I just turned 23 on June 11. I am from extreme northwest Georgia...I have lived here all of my life except when I moved away for college back in 1998. I have been through the doctors also as I have seen some of you guys have been as well. I first became ill when I was a sophomore in high school....nothing showed up on any tests that was run...all they knew was I went from weighing 212 down to 130 over the summer vacation. They just blamed it on a viral infection. It went away and back in 1999...I was living in the dorms and luckily my brother was attending school there also....I woke up and tried to get out of bed and I couldn't walk. I had so much pain that came out of nowhere...it was so scary. I was referred to a rheumatologist by my primary dr. and he flat out told me I was just too young ( I was 19 at the time) and he didn't want to see me in his office again b/c there was nothing wrong with me. I was devastated b/c I began thinking it was just all in my head. BUT, one of my brother's friends....her sister has Lupus and she gave me her dr.s name so I went to see him.....He did all the blood work again and it did show that I had tested positive for Lupus/Fibromyalgia. This has definitely changed me and I have lost so much...including all of my friends from here...it has been so hard but I deal with it....my family is so great and I turn to them for everything. I ran across this website and thought it'd be good for me to make new friends that can relate to me and isn't scared that Im sick. I do have a great boyfriend right now and he helps me a lot so that makes it a little better for me b/c I get bad reactions from guys when they find out. I really look forward to talking to you guys and getting to know you all. I hope everyone is having a great day...it's pouring down rain here so you can imagine how Im feeling..hehe....just peachy Talk to you guys soon. I must be getting back to work Wendy

Posts: 47 08/14/03 04:31	Hey, I'm Janice and am from England. I'm currently studying Physics with Space Science and will enter my 2nd year in October. Up until last year, i was very sporting, doing rock climbing, paragliding and trampolining, and have participate/competed in many sports during school and college. Now I can't do any sports due to a "hip problem". I've not been properly diagnosed, even tho I've been in a lot of pain for 18months, and so far harldy any investigation ahs been done, which has left me feeling extremely frustrated. So far I've only seen phyio's and GPs...10 in total. My suspected diagnosis is trocanteric bursitis and hip impingement, but these cannot be causing all my pain according to them. Anyway, enough rambling. I'm currently living in a student house with my boyfriend, who has been excellent in supporting me, and two other guys, both scientists also. The impossible is only what you make it to be...

Posts: 34 08/18/03 10:13	Well, here goes. I grew up in Santa Ysabel, CA (about 1 1/2 hours from San Diego, CA) from the age of 10. As like ZuriDea I also have a twin brother.... And yes there is no experience quite like having a twin!!! My school was so small I played all kinds of sports. My graduating class was 28 and it is a public school!!! I started playing softball in 5th grade and stopped playing on teams when I graduated high school in '99. I started playing volleyball in junior high and kept on playing on teams till graduation and now only play occasionally with no rules LOL... I also played basketball for 6 years in junior high and high school... I am proud to say we earned our schools first banner by going to the finals. Now it is a little tougher to play anything... I joined the Navy in May 2000 and have been stationed in San Diego since Nov 2000. I am almost out. I got married on August 10, 2002. And the first year has gone very well. No kids yet. I started feeling pain about a year ago in my wrists. I was diagnosed with Carpol Instability Non-decociative (CIND). It is a little better, but I have a hard time with the cramps and pain in my wrists. Then recently I have been going through all kinds of tests with all kinds of doctors. They now believe I have Fibromyalgia and Rhuematory Arthritis. I have a very important appointment on Sept 12, 03 with a rhuematoligist which should tell me a lot. I have been in so much pain, so I hope we figure something out. I plan on getting out of the Navy and becoming a photographer. I have the course list ready... all I need to do is get out of the Navy. My names Vicki, lm soon to turn 20 and l live in the UK, in the midlands. Ive suffered with ME for 7 long years.... lm studying for a degree at home as lm not able to get out much. But lm learning to drive which is going to be such a big help!! I live at home with my parents and love spening time with my nieces and nephews, who completely wear me out but l love them to bits there so sweet. I have met some great friends online, particularly through 'ayme' which l noticed is listed in your links page . I was very active until l got sick, and l still try to be only it doesnt really work LOL anyway thats me bye for now love Vicki

Posts: 554 12/01/03 05:34 Katydid Young Adult Host	I guess I've been here long enough that I should do this. Well, my name is Katie and I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. My birthday is on Dec. 9 of 1987, so right now I am almost 16 and I am a sophomore in high school. My Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome started when I was 9. My older brother who is 3 years older than me and my mother also have FMS/CFS and I remember how it felt to not understand but think that I did. I am not exactly sure what triggered my Fibro. I broke my nose that year but other than that I cannot think of any major injury or illness that I had. I struggled through school for 3 years before my primary physician diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and mild Asthma. In 7th grade my depression and anxiety began. That has been an ongoing struggle for me. I have been deep enough in depression to consider suicide and I hope to never visit that dark place again. I'm also hypoglycemic. I struggled greatly through jr. high and tried many different schedules, all of which we had to fight for. The high school is a much different story now. They let me go at the end half of the day and offer a place to lie down in the counseling office if ever I need to. My teachers for the most part have been pretty accommodating and I am enjoying school once again. Like all of us, I've had to learn to live with my condition. I was always very active and was a bit of a tom boy, growing up in a small town in the Rocky Mountains for a good part of my life. I was always mountain biking or horseback riding or falling out of trees. It took a lot to come to terms with everything. My three younger siblings are adopted. My older brother and I are the only biological children. They all have their own lists of conditions which I won't go through at this time, but it adds to all the normal chaos of a larger family. My family is very close knit and they have helped me greatly in my daily struggle. The greatest power in my life that has helped me is God and my religion. I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (a.k.a. LDS or Mormon). God is always with us and will never give us more than He knows we can handle, so He must be making us all tough for something! Well, that's all I've got right now, I may come back and revise this. luv, katie

Posts: 5 01/29/04 06:11	My name is Amanda and I'm brand new here! I'm 23 and I live in Austin, Tx. I'll be getting married on Feb. 6th, then we're going to Costa Rica for our honeymoon! My fiance, Jeramiah, and I started dating when we were freshmen in high school and the day we get married will be our 9 year anniversary. About 7 years ago my life couldn't get any better. I'd gotten my first car, I was doing great in school, I was in love, and I was winning first place in every horse riding competition I was in (not the cowboy hat and belt buckle kind but the english jumping and little saddle kind. Riding horse is the only sport I've ever been interested in, it's still my love, and I can't do it anymore. I was babysitting one day, playing around, a kid jumped on my back and from then on it's been misery. This horrible pain came out of nowhere and it didn't go away. I went to more doctors than I can count and come to find out I have scoliosis and I, nor my parents, ever knew. The babysitting accident damaged 6 nerves and 1 disc that have been a constant problem since then. Since then all sorts of problems have popped up, graves disease, carpal tunnel, seizures, blinding migraines, and 4 more of what my doctor calls "natural back injuries". Disks crumbling, cartilage disappearing, nerves freaking out, constant nausea, and a pain so unbearable that all you can do is cry but even that hurts. All because my spine is curved, and it's not even really that noticeable. I'm currently waiting on results from tests to see if I have fibromyalgia so I'm pretty nervous. Any info that you guys could give me would help ease my anxiety. Well, my day's over, I get to go home to my dog now. Take care! Amanda

Posts: 20143 01/29/04 12:18 Co-Founder	Hello Amanda, I am so sorry you have been through so much! I have had a disc removed. Did you take yours out? When the neuro surgeon got in the area he said there was little slivers of it embedded in the chord, and that was doing nerve damage also, that never showed up on the MRI. I was so glad I had it done, because the MRI only showed a few things that the doctors didnt feel surgery was necessary. It was much worse than they saw. I have lived the excruciating pain that you explain. I am alot older, but have had a series of pain/traumas/fatigue problems over the course of 16 years. I have also had remissions for years at a time, so hang in there! I can say this...that many who get the diagnoses of Fibromyalgia, learn to live with it. But the sad part is many times the doctors fall back on that diagnosis rather than finding exactly what is causing the pain. In fact, I think you will get better results if they don't use those letters to describe your health problem. FMS is a confusing illness that is used way too often on women, when they can not find generic answers for your particular problem. Then the problem begins where they cease to seek answers. Many of us find out later that we, indeed have nerve damage, or some other major spine problem. I even had a neurologist tell me, there was nothing wrong with me and to get a life. This hurts tremendously, and is so discouraging. I had surgery 3 months later after a neurosurgeon put me in the hospital in traction, and then a disc removed. Unfortunately we do have to speak up and demand that we see the top specialists before we get answers. Yes, FMS may be a result of dealing with constant pain and other stresses in our life. But it is NOT the cause. Sorry if this is confusing. It took me years to figure this all out. Each person is a little different here. Some of us or I should say, many of us have spine and neck problems that cause most of our pain in our neck/arms/ upper back/and sometimes legs. Many of us have also the FMS and Chronic fatigue Syndrome diagnosis. Have you ever had a horrible case of mono? Just curious. Were you under horrible stress at the time of your injury? Posts: 176 01/31/04 11:07	My heart breaks as I read everyone's story I did not realize how many children, teens and young adults have been affected by chronic pain conditions. Thank you for the warm welcome too!! This is my story: My name is Sarah. During my childhood and early teens years was a dark part of my life. My junior and senior in high school things turned around. I excelled in martial arts, softball and music. I also learned to play raquetball with my sister. I had my share of broken bones and torns ligaments. When I was 14 I was diagnosed with a back condition. None of which was a big deal if my legs go numb I went to therapy. I was focused and made close friends and started dating. I went to college and things were going great, I couldn't complain about anything. My life was so great. Fall semester of 2000 I was have knee pain. I saw a orthopedic doc and they said I has burs on my knees and showed me on my xray. I moved to the first floor of my doorm and started taking Voixx. Things were fine I had a wonderful Christmas break. A month into my spring semester of 2001 I came down with a kidney infection, bladder infection, respitory infection, a mysterious rash and my body ached. I was admitted into my university's hospital. They ran blood work and I spent a few days in there to recover and rest. The doc at that time tested me for Lupus and it came back positive and said I should see a Rhematologist. I became so stiff and in pain it would wake me up at night. I became harder to get out of bed in the mornings. I also began having trouble swallowing. I flew home on emergency cuts and saw the specialist. They sent me back to School with prescriptions. I had an allergic reaction to the meds. My body was covered in a painful rash that itched as well. That summer was pretty rough. I developed a swallowing disorder that has to be treated, I have to have a surgical procedure done when my esphagus closes. I spent a month in therapy as well. My mom thought that I should sit out a semester but I was determined to go back and I ended up withdrawling. I felt like a failure. I continued to get sicker I was in the hospital a few times too. It was not till my third medical opinion till we got some answers, which took three months to diagnos. That was a difficult time. I transfered in to a university in my hometown. During the three months of testing I had a life threatening allergic reaction to a pain med. My throat and tongue swelled shut. I woke up a week later on a ventilator and tubes coming from everywhere. I finish my semester in a wheelchair. That summer I took time to recover. I has been difficult since then. I can't fight infections (end up in the hospital). One year ago I was diagnosed with PCOS which has been difficult to take and it has done a number to my body. Through the pain and medical conditions I have managed to continue my education and hold down a part time job with full medical benefits. My job is a blessing. My employer is so good to me. This December I will finally graduate and have my degree and liscensure as a special education teacher. What has helped me the most is my faith, self-determination and music.
