This tutorial works for Photoshop CS (and really any version would be fine). If you don't have Photoshop, the principles remain the same but the locations of buttons and such may be different. You also may not have a "save for web" option, which is handy but not required.
1. Open whatever picture you have chosen for your icon in Photoshop. (I am going to assume throughout this tutorial that, if you have image editing software in the first place, you know how to open and save files as you see fit.)
2. Select the crop tool as shown. If you do not use Photoshop, you'll need to find your crop tool elsewhere possibly, but it will exist.
3. Set the paramaters for the crop tool to a width and height of 60 px at 72 pixels per inch.
4. The crop tool will remove extra image area outside of the square you select as well as resize the image to the size needed for this board. Place your cursor at the top-left corner of the area you want to keep, hold the left button down, and drag diagonally across the image until you have everything you want selected. When you are happy with your selection, press the Enter key. If you're not happy, press Escape and try again.
5. Click on the file menu in the upper left corner of your window and scroll down to and click "Save for Web".
6. From the "Preset" menu to the right of your image window (or windows, as is the case with my example image), select the "JPEG High" option.
Once you have completed this portion, select "Save" and choose a location for your image. At this point you're going to need to upload your image to a web server or have someone do it for you. I can do this as can several others using this site. Once this is done, ask the person for the URL of the picture and write it down.
7. Open your browser, come to this website and log in if necessary. Select "My Control Center" as indicated.
8. Select "Edit Profile" from your account screen.
9. Fill in the box under "My Photo" with the URL of your image.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Save Changes". (Oh come on, you don't need a picture for that!)
That's it, you're done! Now all that is left is to...
