Trick your address book/ email virus This tip won't prevent YOU from getting any viruses (you have to scan those attachments yourself before opening them to do that), but it will stop those viruses from latching onto your address book and sending itself out to others. To avoid spreading computer viruses, create a contact in your email address book with the name : !0000 with no email address in the details. This contact will then show up as your first contact.. If a virus attempts to do a "send all" on your contact list, your pc will put up an error message saying that: "The Message could not be sent. One or more recipients do not have an e-mail address. Please check your Address Book and make sure all the recipients have a valid e-mail address." You click on OK and the offending (virus) message would not have been sent to anyone. Of course no changes have been made to your original contacts list. The offending (virus) message may then be automatically stored in your "Drafts" or "Outbox" folder. Go in there and delete the offending message. Problem is solved and virus is not spread. Also stay updated on the Virus Alerts from Microsoft: www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/?url=/technet/security/virus/alerts/ How to enable the firewall if you have Windows XP pro: www.microsoft.com/security/protect/default.asp LEVEL OF PRIVACY from control panel, choose Internet options click on Privacy tab move the lever up to at least the middle level, and that may not be enough protection. But it pretty much allows you to surf the web without alot of white pages, etc. click apply, ok. A higher setting is recommended for protection. It explains each level of setting. I have mine medium high. THE NEXT LEVEL UP WILL HANG UP SOME OF YOUR LOG INS, AND MAYBE MAKE YUKU LOG IN PROBLEMS UNLESS YOU cLICK ON EDIT AND COPY AND PASTE ALL YOUR HANG OUTS IN THE "ALLOW" BOX. cLICK ok from there click on security tab, I have mine to medium. apply, OK. This again, can be a low level security these days. You can raise it or also click on custom level and make what you allow and what you dont. or you can move to Advanced tab choose what you want to allow by checking off boxes.Apply, OK. You just have to decide yourself what fits your style, and if you have other security firewalls like on your anti-virus type then you probably can combine the protection that makes it livable for you. Here is some more info: My Norton updated automatically today and did the usual scan, and nothing but O's...do you know the name of it so I can look it up on Symantec? securityresponse.symantec.com/ Was it in your email? It is best to set our virus software on auto-update, then its continually updated. Although there is still risks involved, the updating usually is on top of the latest viruses. But the majority of viruses are usually old ones and many aren't accurate enough to do much damage. So if its caught in time you do have a chance of nothing being damaged. Some of the old ones are still floating around for years now and still reak havoc on people who are involved with alot of group emails and email message boards. Yahoo message boards is one of the worse for spreading viruses. I cancelled quite a few old hang outs which I don't post to anymore because all those darn emails are just a bigger risk of viruses. We do not have that here at all. Although there is some small risk involved with clicking on strangers profiles. I think EZboard fixed that tho. But as far as the board there is no risk at all, unless you open a unfamiliar file. There have been a few ecard companies that have viruses, so they can be a danger sometimes. ]rarely] Its all in emails, occasionally music and graphics. I never open an exe. file. If you are ever worried about opening a file you can put the file in a folder on your desktop, [drag it unopened] and ask your virus scanner to check it. Bottom line, never open a file. Ever. Unless you know someone is sending it to you. The trouble with group emails is a virus can come to you from a friend and she/he doesn't even know she/he is sending it! I even dump emails that say forward,forwd. You can read an email without opening it, if you are unsure if its safe: Dont open, but highlight the email. [one click] right click-choose and left click properties Click on Details tab click on Message Source From there you can read the body of the email without ever opening it, if you are unsure. You will not get any virus by doing this. Make sure you do this also in Outlook: go to Tools / options I uncheck the first 4 boxes to be safe go to Read tab uncheck the two middle boxes that say automatically expand, and auto download message in Preview. Click on apply and OK. If your virus scanner removed or quarantined it, you probably won't get any damage at all. Some tho, are set to start damage later like a month later, so sometimes it may have been from an old email. Great that your scan caught it instead of you Virginia! Thats when its too late. What a nightmare if we didn;t have these virus scans! Re: WORM ALERT -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I did not know to disable XP, nor did I ever hear that the virus will still display itself if you do system restore...heres the info: 1. Disabling System Restore (Windows Me/XP) If you are running Windows Me or Windows XP, we recommend that you temporarily turn off System Restore. Windows Me/XP uses this feature, which is enabled by default, to restore the files on your computer in case they become damaged. If a virus, worm, or Trojan infects a computer, System Restore may back up the virus, worm, or Trojan on the computer. Windows prevents outside programs, including antivirus programs, from modifying System Restore. Therefore, antivirus programs or tools cannot remove threats in the System Restore folder. As a result, System Restore has the potential of restoring an infected file on your computer, even after you have cleaned the infected files from all the other locations. Also, a virus scan may detect a threat in the System Restore folder even though you have removed the threat.
