Was it in your email? It is best to set our virus software on auto-update, then its continually updated. Although there is still risks involved, the updating usually is on top of the latest viruses. But the majority of viruses are usually old ones and many aren't accurate enough to do much damage. So if its caught in time you do have a chance of nothing being damaged. Some of the old ones are still floating around for years now and still reak havoc on people who are involved with alot of group emails and email message boards. Yahoo message boards is one of the worse for spreading viruses. I cancelled quite a few old hang outs which I don't post to anymore because all those darn emails are just a bigger risk of viruses. We do not have that here at all. Although there is some small risk involved with clicking on strangers profiles. I think EZboard fixed that tho.

But as far as the board there is no risk at all, unless you open a unfamiliar file. There have been a few ecard companies that have viruses, so they can be a danger sometimes. ]rarely] Its all in emails, occasionally music and graphics. I never open an exe. file.

If you are ever worried about opening a file you can put the file in a folder on your desktop, [drag it unopened] and ask your virus scanner to check it.

Bottom line, never open a file. Ever. Unless you know someone is sending it to you. The trouble with group emails is a virus can come to you from a friend and she/he doesn't even know she/he is sending it! I even dump emails that say forward,forwd.

You can read an email without opening it, if you are unsure if its safe:
Dont open, but highlight the email. [one click]
right click-choose and left click properties
Click on Details tab
click on Message Source
From there you can read the body of the email without ever opening it, if you are unsure. You will not get any virus by doing this.

Make sure you do this also in Outlook:
go to Tools / options
I uncheck the first 4 boxes to be safe
go to Read tab
uncheck the two middle boxes that say automatically expand, and auto download message in Preview. Click on apply and OK.

If your virus scanner removed or quarantined it, you probably won't get any damage at all. Some tho, are set to start damage later like a month later, so sometimes it may have been from an old email. Great that your scan caught it instead of you Virginia! Thats when its too late. What a nightmare if we didn;t have these virus scans!

I did not know to disable XP, nor did I ever hear that the virus will still display itself if you do system restore...heres the info:

1. Disabling System Restore (Windows Me/XP)

If you are running Windows Me or Windows XP, we recommend that you temporarily turn off System Restore. Windows Me/XP uses this feature, which is enabled by default, to restore the files on your computer in case they become damaged. If a virus, worm, or Trojan infects a computer, System Restore may back up the virus, worm, or Trojan on the computer.

Windows prevents outside programs, including antivirus programs, from modifying System Restore. Therefore, antivirus programs or tools cannot remove threats in the System Restore folder. As a result, System Restore has the potential of restoring an infected file on your computer, even after you have cleaned the infected files from all the other locations.

Also, a virus scan may detect a threat in the System Restore folder even though you have removed the threat.
