How can I find a good lawyer? |
Lead | ||
|
I have been trying to get SSDI for a long time. I
am not able to work and it has been very hard. I am
thinking to use a lawyer. Do i have to pay them before I
get SSDI? Should I use one that advertises on TV? I need
advise on how to find a lawyer in New York. Thank You,
All !

Hi Dimetron! I'll copy here what I mentioned in
another thread:
Quote: SSDI lawyers are not allowed to be paid until after they have won your SSDI case, and then they are only allowed to charge a certain amount of money (I think the amount can not exceed around $5,000 - there's a precise amount, but I forget what it is off the top of my head). If any lawyer wants money before your case begins, then they are breaking the rules of their professional lawyers association (and possibly federal law). SSDI get paid ONLY if they win your case. If they lose, then they won't get paid at all. I recommend you do some serious online searching for a lawyer - don't just take whatever comes across on the television. Then meet with some lawyers and see who you trust the most and who you feel most comfortable with. Ask a lot of questions before you hire the person - the lawyer should feel comfortable answering whatever questions you have, provided they take place in the confines of your appointment with him/her. There are lawyers who specialize in Social Security cases - those are probably the best ones to work with, since they'll have the most experience. Please understand that none of us are "professionals" here - we can only speak to you here based on our own limited experiences. |

Thank You, SunnyMary for your response . It has so
much info! After all , I contacted the attorney Jeff
Rabin even though he is based far from me. He was
coughing badly, cause of the cold. But I have never
talked to a lawyer who sounded so Nice ! He gave me info
for lawyer near me who does this type of work and should
be good too. I'll have the appoitment soon and let You
know. Thank You again and Take Care of Yourself.

Here is what I wrote in my e-mail to Jefrey Rabin. I thought i'll just cut and paste it here to show how things went since I called him.
Dear Mr. Robin , I need to THANK YOU again for referring me to Fusco lawyers in NY.
Barry Lewis , an associate, assigned to my case was not only a pleasant person but also a very good lawyer with experience . She said I have a good case
and that I should be able to get SSD or SSI ,which made me feel more at-ease right from the beginning .
She knew all judges in 5-borough ,NY. She said: " If You lived in Queens I would tell You to move to a different borough, cause those Judges are
terrible. ( It's the Head Judge who sets the mood ) But You will be fine! "
The Judge I saw was actually quite hostile. And that made me very nervous. But Ms. Lewis said that he may still approve, after reviewing my case, which
he should've done before the hearing. And that she will continue to fight for me even if decision is negative.
I Did get approved like she said, I learned today. I should start getting SSD within two months !
Thank You , Mr Rabin.
Thank You and good luck everyone !
