CFS and LCD monitors |
Lead | ||

I just bought my first LCD monitor this week. It's huge - 25.5" viewing area. I've always read that LCDs were easier on the eyes than CRTs, but
I'm finding I'm dealing with a lot of eye fatigue in the first few days. Have any of you experienced this? If so, does it go away? Any ideas?

Hello and nice to see you!! How close are you sitting? Is this your computer monitor or your TV? And of course you have tried to adjust the light? My monitory now 17' and I like it much better than 15. But breaks are extremely important. |

I've been moving the monitor to try anywhere between just under 3 to just under 4 feet. There is some chance the fatigue issue has to do with the weather
but I'm not counting on it.
... and nice to see you too.

Hmmm...it might have to do with CFS, but it might not.
The Apple MacBookPro laptop I use now has an LCD screen and it's never bothered me. But I remember trying out an LCD flat screen about 4 years ago that was not the greatest, and after a few hours I felt like I was going to go blind. I finally replaced that LCD monitor with my old CRT monitor. As soon as I stopped using the LCD monitor, the eye strain went away. As a result of that problem, I learned from my friends that there can be a huge variation in the quality of LCD monitors. Some of the cheaper models tend to give eye strain. I think it has something to do with the refresh rate - the number of times it blinks. I'm definitely not a techie, but I was told by my techie friends that all LCD monitors blink really fast (you can't consciously see it happening), but some are faster than others - the faster, the better, from what I was told. To further complicate things, these cheaper models can cause eye strain in some people, but not all (at the time, I was working next door to someone who had just installed the same LCD monitor and had no problem with it at all). |

Hmmm, i found that my lcd moniter was MUCH easier on the eyes. It could be that your screen is soooo big. I'd bet your eyes will get use to it.
Nice to see you again. |

I"m not sure my comments are useful, but: When I started using a computer frequently when I was very sick I got a great deal of eye pain, severe burning.
I also had varying ability to see, sometimes fairly well, sometimes I could not resolve the same print I had made out just a little while ago. Someone
suggested it could be the crt screen, and that I try a screen shield. I did but it did not help. My problems waxed and wane overall, but never resolved
including on an LCD monitor when I made the switch. Eventually I learned I was infected with Lyme, then a few years later I learned I had Bartonella. Treatment
for both infections has helped a lot, but not yet resolved the problem.

It could be the size but I think it's something more... undetectable. I am running the monitor through a VGA connection right now until the rest of the
parts are assembled for my computer. Hopefully using VGA instead of DVI is causing the problem, because whatever it is, it's definitely the monitor
aggravating the problem.
All LCD monitors have the same refresh rate, but there are other, similar factors that could be in play that may or may not resolve with the switch to a DVI connector. Thanks for your help all. |

I was able to solve some of my problem, and hopefully tomorrow the rest will get fixed by the new connector. It turns out that the phase was way off in the
monitor settings. It's hard to describe what "phase" does, but the bottom line is that it causes a lot of eye fatigue in a way that is hard to
place until you run some specific tests.
It's unfortunate that we're entering the oak pollen season at the very same time all of this is happening. My family is all having some eye issues of late on account of this, so I'm more confused than I should be right now I dare say. Hopefully it'll work out by tomorrow. Who knows? |
