Lya,
Here at Friends we all are the same, whether or not from China, Norway, or the USA. The thing I love most about China is your foods! My son and I love the different foods your country is so famous for. My name is Virginia, and I am from the USA. Nice to meet you Lya.

Hello Lya and welcome to friends!
As Virginia says, here we are all alike. But I guess that's not what you meant - more our personal opinions...? and for me China is far, far away and very exotic.
That's what wonderful with this Internet-world - all distances disappear.
For me China is a big, beautiful country with diversity and a turbulent past. In school we learned the history from when the empire ruled and the Mao period, and later I've read some books by Chinese authors who described how it could be to live there. But I'm sure that only gave me a tiny glimpse of how it really was. The today's China my impression is you have your wonders and problems like any other country. And since you have 1/6 of the worlds population you have your fair share of good, bad, kind and vicious people. The same as in Norway but ours in a much smaller scale. We are only around 4,6 millions inhabitants. As for the politics it's my firm believe that any country and any people has the right to form their own. Who are we to say what's right and wrong, and what's good and bad. Our cultural background may make something very wrong for us, but very right for others. We may lift our voices if we see human rights being violated, but we can also find similar things in our own "backyard" When it comes to human rights I, personally, can't agree with any compromise - they should be the same for people all over the world! The latest earthquake in your country was dominating the headlines in Norwegian media for a long time. We were deeply affected by this tragedy and impressed with all the heroes that put their own lives at risk to save others. I love Chinese food and old Chinese art (the modern art I know little about As a curiosity I can tell that, as a child, we always said, if someone was digging a hole in the ground, that they were trying to dig their way to China. You are on the opposite side of the globe for us. And in our mind we were sure you walked around upside-down - and we were curious why you didn't fall off the earth.
But if I may return the question - what do you know, and think, of us Norsemen? What impression do you have of us as a country, people and individuals - if any?? So nice to get a new member from China. I'm looking forward getting to know you better!

I have many friends from the Chinese community in the UK. I love the Chinese culture and people. Politically not too keen, then again I don't like my own
government either.

Like most people, I love what I see on TV about China. It looks to be a beautiful country and has always fascinated me. But also I suppose, whenever someone mentions China, my mind flashes back to 1989 and the Tiananmen Square horror. And I was as horrified as everyone else when the earthquake struck in the Sichuan Province. The carnage was dreadful to see and my heart went out to all the people involved. So I can't say I know that much about your country. Perhaps you could post here regularly and tell us all about it. I won't say I love Chinese food, as I know that the stuff we get here, bears no resemblance to the food you eat. It is westernised so we accept it. But what I eat, is lovely! By the way, my name is Penny and I come from England. Nice to meet you. Penny |

It's nice to meet you,and welcome to Friends.Like so many others, I have no problem with the Chinese people,it'sa the government I'm not fond if-
but like Paganstarchild, I don't like my own government much, either.
I have always had a fascination with Chinese culture, though. One of my all-time favorite legends is the one about The Monkey King, and one of my favorite goddesses is Kwan Yin(Goddess of compassion).I'm afraid that like so many in the western world, I know very little of Chinese society the way it is now, though. So, I'm very much looking forward to getting to know you,and finding out more about you, and about modern life in China. |

Hello Lya, Welcome to Friends.
I have huge admiration for the Chinese People. You are a very ancient culture and have much knowledge and wisdom that began in China. Like Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine. Tai Chi, Qi Kong and all the Energy therapies. And now we are taking them up and using them in the Western World thanks to your discoveries of them. You are a very diligent and hard working and polite people and never cause any problems when you come to live in another country. I see that from the Chinese people who live here in London. You are very welcome here. Sometimes I think your Government is harsh, but then again, China is a huge country and maybe the Government feels it needs a strong hand. I know that the Government is working very hard to make life better for the Chinese people. There is much industry being built and power stations to give Chinese people more of what we have in the West. We have many programmes on the TV about China. I have been watching one called Chinese School. You have amazing standards of schooling and Universities that would put ours to shame. I see the Chinese children in the upper school work from 8am to 6pm each day and then have evening studies as well. I think your law of 1 child per couple seems a bit strict. But then again, the alternative is to allow the country to become so overpopulated that there is not enough food for everyone and people starve, so it is probably the right overall policy, but not easy for the individual who has to limit their family. There has been controversy over Tibet. But I know that the Chinese Government allows the Tibetans to live as they have always lived. They are allowed their Buddhist monasteries. They are not governed by the one child per family rule. A wife is allowed to have 3 husbands which is their custom. If they marry one man in the family then they marry all his brothers too, so that inherited land does not become split up. Tibet is still able to retain all it's old customs. So I don't see China being such a wicked oppressor of Tibet as some of our Newspapers try to make out. I'm interested that you are able to access our Board. I thought China kept very tight boundaries on internet use and kept it mainly within Chinese Borders. I was not aware that you could surf the whole internet. Would be so interested to hear all about these things, or if some of the things I've mentioned are not correct. I have only learned them from TV programmes. Bye for now, Hope you come back and post some more.

Hello Lya, Welcome to friends. My opinions about China are mostly formed either from the news or from Betty Kwan, my good friend for three decades. She is an
emigre from Hong Kong who was the first girlfriend I made when I went to college. We still go camping together every year. My sense of Chinese culture is
limited, I don't feel well educated. I own a onehundred year old Chinese scroll of pictures of cats. I go to Asian Art Museums occasionally, and my family
goes out for dim sum most weekends. I've been to a Chinese ballet. Pretty limited exposure I think. I would enjoy getting more educated and hope to see you
here again.
